Italian Bread Bowls

Mmmm . . . bread bowls. Something about them speaks of comfort and warmth. A rustic-kind-of-way to eat soup. I remember eating clam chowder in a sour dough bread bowl on Pier 39 in San Francisco for the very first time when I was 17. I tried my hand at them later at home, and if my memory serves me correctly, they turned out well, although the clam chowder didn’t hold a candle to the stuff we had ordered their by the water’s edge! And then there are always the tempting bread bowls at Panera Bread. Who can resist those for very long?

A few weeks ago I searched for a recipe that seemed good for an afternoon bread-baking urge. I didn’t have time for sour dough that day, but I came upon the following recipe at It turned out great and I will definitely be baking these again!

The Mr & I were attending a party that evening, and I needed a bread bowl for my crab dip. So I made an extra large bowl, plus 4 smaller ones for eating with soup later. {I ended up freezing the small bowls and they were excellent later in the week, thawed and heated a bit to serve up chili.

**quick edit . . . i forgot to mention that i only did one egg wash AFTER the bread had been baking for 10-15 minutes. this seemed to take care of a problem i’ve had with another bread recipe, where the bread kind of spread and “sagged” after the egg wash. **

    oh. my. word. these look sooooo good! can i just buy a whole bunch from you to store in my freezer? i love how you said, “an afternoon bread-baking urge.” we need to switch up, you and i. i need some of your baking urges. mine is minimalistic, basic whole wheat bread about once a week or so. :)

      I already mentioned this to you on FB, but you know I would gladly fill your freezer with bread bowls in exchange for a bit of *your* beautiful talent . . . and as for the basic whole wheat bread . . . it still warms my heart and reminds me of home!! :)

    I LOVE this recipe,AND the idea…There’s something so homey about filling bread bowls w/ soup,and kind of elegant too…like only something you would find at a restaurant!! I used an electric knife to cut the tops off and then also to make the round “hole”…then it easily scoops out w/ your fingers.LOVE IT!! And I’ll certainly be using this again!! Thanks for sharing !!
