Herba-Smoothies!

In a previous post I alluded to a great giveaway coming up. Well, here it is, and I’m so excited to share it with you because it’s something I have been having fun with for a little while now!

My latest educate-myself, get-healthy and better-serve-my-family interest has been to learn about herbs for daily diet and medicinal intake. It’s something I have been intrigued with for quite a while and working at little by little, but the HUGE herb book at the library looked daunting . . . I mean how would I even remember what I read?

So I’ve been picking up little bits of info here and there . . . and a main source has been BulkHerbStore.com. A few of their teas have become a favorite in this household in the past couple of years, and now, I am loving Shoshanna’s herba-smoothie mixes.

Before you stop reading because this just isn’t your thing, and you are totally bored, just let me say that you should watch the little youtube clips this company has available. Here’s a link to the “Kid Smoothie” to get you started.

***Side note***Dietrich and I have been known to sit and watch these for quite some time! The first time I made a kid smoothie for him, I told him that it was the recipe we had learned/watched on that little youtube. He was a little leery about trying it at first ’cause I’d made him a pretty strong-tasting, not-so-yummy green smoothie once before, just by wingin’ it with my own ingredients. Well, he gulped this new one right down with a smile. The next day when I again served it to him, he asked with a little grin, “Is des da ‘kid smoovie?'” (Is this the kid smoovie?) He and Claudia (who starts waving her arms excitedly when the blender comes out) are now hooked. =) Oh, and Phil enjoys them too.***

Shoshanna’s enthusiasm, little teaching tips, and of course, the delicious-looking smoothies she serves up at the end always make me feel like I want to and CAN do this! The herb names and their purposes are slowing starting to stick with me, and best of all, we now enjoy delicious, healthy, herb-boosted smoothies at our house on a regular basis.
I could buy all of the individual herbs from bulkherbstore separately, but so far, I have been buying the herba-smoothie blends that are already put together for convenient use~and labeled with names such as “Stress-less” or “Daily Boost” or “Heart Health”, etc. You can check them all out for yourself at their website.
The smoothie recipe on their herb packs includes yogurt, frozen fruit, a heaping teaspoon of your herba-smoothie mix of choice, and a few other things, but right now my favorite recipe is the one used in Shoshanna’s Kid Smoothie youtube clip . . . and I just add the herbs I’m wanting for that day.
The recipe is as follows:
3/4 cup fresh mango
5 small chunks frozen banana
1/4 cup fresh or frozen pineapple
2 Tb Orange Juice concentrate (for sweetener)
About 1/4 -1/2 cup of Raw, Young Coconut (looks like water)
Small handful of Kale
1 heaping tsp. of herb mix.
Blend well~till all the kale is in tiny, tiny pieces~and serve!
Again, you’ll discover this on your own from watching some of the youtubes, but I found it so interesting to learn that the young coconut water and kale work together as an amazing blood purifier, which is something we all need because of junk food that slips into our diets. [“Slips” into our diets?? Well, maybe, junk food is a little more a part of our lives than that . . . but either way, I can always use whatever help I can get in the ‘eat healthy/stay healthy’ department. What about you?]
OK, so on to the best part of this post for you. Bulk Herb Store has generously given me a couple of herba-smoothie packs (Daily Boost & Stress Less) to pass on to my readers in a give-away. (All of my “bragging” about their store and products is my own doing . . . I’m not being reimbursed in any way.)
So, if you would like a chance to win one of these samples along with once of their very-interesting-to-read catalogs, please leave your name and some way I can contact you (or else you’ll have to come back and check to see if you are a winner). You may enter your name a second time by watching at least one bulkherbstore youtube clip and telling me you did. And you may enter your name three times more by mentioning/linking to this post on your own site or facebook and leaving the link for me to see. So, all together, you can enter your name up to 5 times.

So, again, six people will receive either a Stress-Less sample pack or a Daily Boost sample pack and a catalog. I have them packaged in approximately 1 cup portions, so according to my estimations you should be able to make around 40+ delicious, healthy, smoothies for you and your family.

The deadline for entering this giveaway is Tuesday, July 20th.

Happy learning, and I hope you win!

I get the young coconut at our local healthfood store for a little over $2. I believe some of the larger, really nice grocery stores like Giant (maybe?) may carry them. You can always ask them to get them for you!

This is def. something I'll be needing to get into! I watched the kid smoothie clip. I wish she would sell the herbs as a mix ~ or did I miss that?

  19. Shelly July 14, 2010 at 3:46 pm #

    reply@kathy

You can buy all the herbs seperately, AND there are at least 4 mixes available as well. I've only used the mixes so far.

Hey, great post on smoothies. Heidi and I have started a new routine as of late where she has a very health, SUGAR FREE, (yes, emphasis is needed there for my sake) smoothie made from homemade yogurt, and frozen fruit ready for me when I walk in the door from work. I've figured out through extensive research that calling her when I'm about half way home from work provides me with the best timing for smoothie consumption upon my return. (Is this comment long enough to count as a few, or do I need to actually post more?) All that to say, yay for smoothies!! Not sure I'm sold on the herbs though . . . sugar free is about far enough outside my box!

Thanks for the idea. : )
